Sold Out Across The Philippines
The Philippines is a country with a population of approximately 87 million people and, over the past 26 years, David Pomeranz and his love songs have literally become part of the very fabric of Filipino life. His audiences range in age from 4 years old to 80 and comprise every aspect of the population - from school girls to Corporate executives to provincial farmers alike. In fact, there are very few Filipinos anywhere in the world who do not know and love David Pomeranz’ music.
In December of 1999 – “Born For You – His Best And More” instantly went 5 times platinum and sold 200,000 copies, David packed the Araneta Coliseum, the second largest concert venue in all of Asia, and the album’s newly-penned title song “Born For You” (co-written by David and award-winner, David Zippel), topped the charts at Number One for a record 14 straight weeks and earned David the FILSCAP award for “Most Performed International Song Of The Year”. Over the following few months - Five more singles were released from that album and all became major Radio hits. That Spring - “Born For You – His Best And More” achieved 10 times platinum status, selling over 500,000 units in the Philippines alone and making it the largest selling International Pop album in the history of that country!
David Vibes Spreads Throughout Asia!
In 2000 – David received a “Humanitarian Award” from the “Philippine National Red Cross Street Children Program” for his fundraising efforts on their behalf. He also produced his second Universal album, “The Eyes Of Christmas” in Manila over a 6 week period and toured the country extensively with a Holiday concert performance in Hong Kong’s Chatham square for 10,000 Filipinos. He then began to realize the extent of his popularity with Filipino “ex-patriots” living outside the country as well. David toured Singapore (celebrating the 35th Anniversary of their Independence), Bangkok and Kuala Lampur and was met with throngs of Filipino fans wherever he went and even broadcasted his own three-hour Christmas special on the GMA-7 Network entitled, ‘David Pomeranz, A Christmas Star”. That show was viewed in record numbers on Christmas Eve and his popularity began to expand even further. In 2001, David released his third Universal album, "On This Day", which produced several more Radio hits and he continued to sell out concerts wherever he went.
Over the past several years, due to his extensive Television appearances and filmed Concert Specials broadcast to Filipinos worldwide via their International Cable Channels, “TFC” and “GMA”, the approximately 10 million Filipinos around the world (and 3 million in America) now all know and love David. Because of this large fan base, David began to perform Filipino concerts throughout the United States. He has now toured the U.S. with some of the Philippine’s biggest stars at such venues as The Universal Amphitheater (L.A.), The Cow Palace (San Francisco), The Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Pechanga Casino (Temecula, CA), Peppermill Casino (Reno), Bally’s (Las Vegas), Trump’s Taj Mahal (Atlantic City) and Cache Creek Casino and he continues to discover his Filipino fans are everywhere.
Filipino Concerts Across America
In 2008 - David recorded a fourth album, “Hold Tight” (Becca/Universal) and more hits were generated. He performed a sold-out concert at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila with many of the Leading Figures in the world of the Arts, Religion, Education and Government in attendance.
Key To The City - Manila
In 2007, David released yet another collection of Pomeranz classics "Hold Tight" (Becca Universal) and, in 2008, he performed a special concert at the Philippine Convention Center (PICC) in Manila with many of the leading figures in the world of the Arts, Religion, Education and Government in attendance. In February of the same year, David became the first International Music Star to be awarded the Key To The City of Manila by its Mayor, Alfredo S. Lim for his contributions to the Filipino eople around the world. In December of 2008, as part of the pay-per-view Oscar De La Jolla / Manny Pacquiao Welterweight bout on HBO, Manny Pacquiao, stopped by and on the air sang his “favorite song in the world” - David’s “Born For You”.
Always generous of his time to aid Filipino Social Betterment Organizations including "The Dangerous Drug Board", "The Way To Happiness Foundation" and "The Philippine National Red Cross", in the early months of 2009, David performed three sold out concerts in Manila, Cebu and Davao to benefit “Operation Smile Philippines” – an organization of surgeons from around the world who come to perform, free of charge, operations on the poorest children to remedy Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. A Documentary team filmed the event and David’s Television Special of the “Operation Smile” was broadcast and is expected to be nominated for awards in Broadcast Excellence.
With all of his accomplishments and works, it is no surprise that David has earned the title, as one inerviewer dubbed him, the "Adopted Son Of The Philippines".
How It All Began...
Back in 1983 David received a phone call at his Malibu home from a Filipino promoter who raved about how songs from his past Arista and Atlantic recordings were huge hits there (five in all, including two he had recorded for the Hollywood motion movie, “Zapped”) and he agreed to fly David and his band to perform in Manila at The Folk Arts Theater – an 8,000 seat venue - for two nights. David was greeted at the airport by hundreds of screaming fans, flashbulbs flashing and fans waiving signs and shouting his name. David, not expecting the intensity of such a welcome was understandably stunned. The shows were very successful and David published a full page ad in the Philippines Star thanking everyone for the warm welcome. After traveling back home where he continued on with other aspects of his career, over the years he began to feel that he’d been foolish to have taken such a blessed opportunity for granted and wished that he could make it right again. Amazingly, 16 YEARS LATER David received another phone call - from a different promoter - but the content of this call was pretty much the same.
The promoter told David “your records are bigger here than ever, you’ve got to come over and perform for us – and again at The Folk Arts Theater!” (this time on a bill with two other popular American Acts, Stephen Bishop and Michael Johnson.) David vowed not to take this “second chance” for granted and decided to work hard to justify the faith of these warm-hearted people. The February, 1999 concert was a raging success and David was asked to record an album for MCA Universal Philippines comprised of re-recordings of his proven hits along with recording of new songs, as yet unrecorded.
He agreed to return in the summertime to record the album in Manila with Filipino Musicians and to help with promotion once the album was released. In the Summer of 1999 – David spent a month in Manila recording “Born For You – His Best And More”. That August – to take advantage of the mounting “Pomeranz buzz”, Warner Bros. Records Philippines (a rival company), released a compilation album of David’s Arista and Atlantic recordings, “The Best Of David Pomeranz”. In September of the same year – “Born For You – His Best And More” was released and David spent many weeks and several trips to appear on every major Television and Radio program, doing countless News interviews, performing in Malls with 10,000 avid fans in attendance and undergoing as many as five hours of “after-appearance” autograph signings. He was paraded in motorcades down the center of remote villages in the most remote areas of the country and quickly became known and beloved by everyone whom he encountered.
